Course Hero, Inc. is now Learneo!

Learneo is a platform of builder-driven businesses, including Course Hero, CliffsNotes, LitCharts, Quillbot, Symbolab, Scribbr, and LanguageTool, all united around a shared mission of supercharging productivity and learning for everyone. We attract and scale high growth businesses from around the world, built and run by visionary entrepreneurs (we currently have teams based in the US, Canada, India, Israel, and the EU). Each team innovates independently but has a unique opportunity to collaborate, experiment, and grow together, and they are supported by centralized corporate operations functions, including HR, Finance, and Legal.

As Learneo continues to scale and introduce new businesses to the platform, it is imperative that we have the legal infrastructure in place to help them balance ambitious growth goals and increasing operational complexities while minimizing the corporation’s legal risk. As such, we are seeking a dynamic corporate and commercial law expert to join our talented Legal team as Associate General Counsel, reporting directly to our General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. This is a new position for the company - one that is critical to our short and long term success in a rapidly changing environment of technological advancements and innovation.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a practical and agile approach to business partnering and a proven ability to support a wide variety of teams and leaders, ideally on a global scale. This will be a high-impact and fast-paced role where creative problem solving, collaboration, and excellent communication skills are imperative. If you are looking for an opportunity to have a significant impact within a scaling organization and have a passion for technology, learning, and the future of human productivity, this role could be a great fit!

Here are some ways you’ll make an impact:

  • Partner with the General Counsel and leaders from across the organization on a broad range of general corporate matters, including developing plans for supporting international subsidiaries and helping to implement legal processes and strategies for newly acquired businesses
  • Lead and support a team of commercial and corporate attorneys to provide creative and practical counsel to partners on a wide array of commercial and contractual issues, collaborating and building relationships with all key stakeholders as a trusted advisor
  • Own and execute the legal integration plan for new and future acquisitions
  • Provide counsel to Learneo’s global People (HR) teams regarding policy development, employment agreements, equity & bonus plans, and other general labor and employment matters
  • Identify opportunities to unify and streamline legal operations and practices across the Learneo business lines and support the implementation of new processes, tools, and training to improve efficiency and scalability
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Learneo’s products, businesses, go-to-market strategy, and competition
  • Research and maintain a strong understanding of legal and industry developments, including new or changing laws and regulations, and provide timely guidance to business leaders and our product/marketing teams as it relates to consumer rights, privacy and compliance obligations
  • Provide sound dispute and risk management and, post-escalation, active oversight and management of litigation, if applicable
  • Manage the successful delivery of services by outside counsel
  • Lead special projects and various work streams as needed, supporting the efforts to establish and evolve the legal function as Learneo grows and scales

Are you our Associate General Counsel?

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and active bar membership or registered in-house counsel status in the state of California
  • 8+ years of relevant corporate and commercial law practice with exposure to the consumer tech (B2C) sector, including significant experience managing and scaling teams
  • Substantive knowledge of compliance, copyright, and privacy-related laws and regulations, including DMCA safe harbor, GDPR and CCPA/CPRA
  • Demonstrated in-house experience advising and providing practical solutions to the management of privacy, security, HR, and other compliance risks, as well as litigation and investigation experience
  • Extremely comfortable and confident handling multiple projects simultaneously while remaining flexible and managing the needs and expectations of key stakeholders
  • Ability to “see around corners” and respond to changing demands in an energetic and fast-paced environment, including the capacity to think strategically and act tactically in prioritizing, re-prioritizing, and following through
  • Reputation for being a highly professional team player, effective at building collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels, including the ability to distill complex issues through clear, simple, and respectful communication
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and taking initiative, including keen problem solving skills, impeccable judgment, and a strong sense of when to escalate issues
  • Maintains a positive, solutions oriented attitude and leads with self-confidence, enthusiasm, and a growth mindset
  • Possesses a high level of intellectual curiosity with the demonstrated ability to learn and develop new skills, including a history of acquiring knowledge and expertise with respect to new technologies and laws in a dynamic legal landscape
  • Acts, at all times, with the highest level of character and personal integrity, including demonstrating decorum and professionalism with respect to various confidential matters in the department
