The role:

Summary:

The HR Generalist ensures a seamless employee experience throughout the employee lifecycle, from onboarding to offboarding. This role includes maintaining accurate records, managing compliance, coordinating performance processes, supporting regulatory reporting, and helping the Human Resources department create a positive, compliant, and tech-enabled HR environment. The Generalist will also assume responsibilities previously covered under external HR retainers, reducing reliance on consultants.

The role’s responsibilities are, but not limited to:

Contracting, Compliance and Reporting (50%)

  • Draft employment contracts, amendments, and extension letters
  • Maintain accurate employee records in Google Drive and BambooHR.
  • Oversee safeguarding database and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and support visa/work permit applications and renewals.
  • Track end dates for fixed-term contracts and Independent contractor agreements, and coordinate extensions or exits.
  • Assist with data capturing and compilation of documents for annual audits.
  • Compile and submit Employment Equity reports (EEA2 & EEA4) and maintain compliance documentation, in alignment with approved Employment Equity Plan.
  • Own WSP and ATR submissions and assist in OFO code alignment.
  • Maintain up-to-date employee data in BambooHR and compile HR metrics.
  • Coordinate with Payroll on all employee-related changes, including new hires, terminations, additional stipends, voluntary savings, and contractual or personal information updates.
  • Manage HR helpdesk and attend to all employee queries.

Employment Equity & Skills Development Coordination (20%)

  • Coordinate Employment Equity Committee meetings and documentation.
  • Support EE and SDF committee activities, including minute-taking, tracking action items, and submitting reports.
  • Assist in implementing the Employment Equity Plan and S19 Analysis.

Employee Experience and IR Support (20%)

  • Onboard and offboard employees, ensuring smooth documentation, surveys, and handover.
  • Track and support performance improvement processes (PIPs), written warnings, and IR documentation.
  • Coordinate with HR tools (ClickUp, BambooHR, Google Workspace) to manage policies and training workflows.
  • Schedule and document IR proceedings (e.g., counselling, grievances).
  • Manage employee relations cases, including handling grievances, disciplinary procedures, and conflict resolution, while ensuring adherence to internal policies and labour law.

Recruitment Support (5%)

  • Manage internal recruitment coordination in partnership with hiring managers.
  • Ensure job postings, descriptions, and requirements are accurate and consistently updated across platforms.
  • Support competency-based interviews and conduct reference and background checks.
  • Generate offer letters and maintain candidate records in the Applicant Tracking System (ATS).

AI & Digital Enablement (5%)

  • Collaborate on the development and maintenance of AI tools (e.g., Gemini) for common HR queries and policy access.
  • Upload, organize, and maintain digital HR policies and procedures for employee self-service.
  • Identify opportunities to automate HR workflows using internal tools like Google Workspace and ClickUp.

Requirements:

  • B-Tech or Degree in Human Resources Management or related field
  • 3+ years’ experience as a HR Practitioner with industrial relations experience

Essential Skills:

  • Strong administrative skills and knowledge of South African HR regulations
  • Experience with data capturing, BambooHR, and Google Workspace
  • High attention to detail and confidentiality
  • Familiarity with Employment Equity, Skills Development, and SETA/DoL processes and submissions is advantageous

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in employee relations case management, including performance improvement processes (PIPs), disciplinary procedures, grievance handling, and documenting IR proceedings in compliance with labour legislation and company policy.
